NEWS

The Trustees, staff and animals would like to thank all our supporters for the very generous food donations made to us, over the Christmas period. Every tin and bag of food will be put to good use and helps us here carry out this vital work for the animals. Pictured are some of the staff from Seddon Property Services Limited with their donation. Thanks.

Christmas Fund Raising

Thanks to Louise and Georgie who raised £127.20 by selling items at a car boot sale on behalf of the York Animal Home. When presenting the funds to the home they met Ollie (pictured below) who has since been successfully rehomed.

Charity Fund Raising

BethanyBethany, who is 13, recently swam 5000 metres (276 lengths) of Harrogate High School pool to raise £100 for the Animal Home. We don’t have her address to write and thank her so we hope she sees this and knows how much we appreciate her efforts. Thank you Bethany.
Jade (pictured) regularly volunteers for us at the Animal Home and last month she combined her good work by raising £71 for Children in Need by working for a day in her pyjamas.

Xmas Fair 2011

Christmas Fair4 December saw our popular Xmas Fair and this year we were blessed with a dry day although it was cold and our outside stallholders were glad of the lovely hot soup made by Kath from the Gillygate shop. Picture shows our volunteers Jackie, Graham and Suzanne on their festive indoor stalls.

Changing kennels - makeover for our doggy dwellings

RSPCA MakeoverThese people from the local office of NHBC chose the Animal Home for their Community Day activities – and the seven of them painted 13 kennels in one day. Thanks to all of them for this much needed work.
These kennels are now lovely and bright, but there are more to be done. Are you looking for an outlet for your community spirit or team building in 2012? If so please contact Angela at the Animal Home.
The dog on this photo is called Sally and has been successfully rehomed since this picture was taken

Yorkshire in Bloom award for our gardens

Yorkshire in BloomLots of people have commented on how lovely our gardens are thanks to the efforts of our team of volunteer gardeners. Now it’s on public record as our grounds have been awarded a Silver Rose Award in the Charitable Establishments category of Yorkshire in Bloom 2011. We were the only animal charity to win an award this year alongside churches, care homes, hospices and cemeteries.

Glamour paws

Those of you who’ve only seen our staff in their RSPCA uniforms have no idea how well they scrub up. At our recent Burlesque Evening of dance and magic they showed themselves to be worthy of more than a second glance – thanks for arranging it ladies, you were all wonderful.

Sponsored Mount Snowden Climb

Summer, one of the longer term dogs at the York RSPCA, successfully completed her Snowdon challenge at the end of May, in just three hours.
Summer said ‘A great big thank you to all of you that sponsored me. It was a challenge but I made it! All the funds raised will help look after me and my four legged friends at the York Animal Home. Mandy and Marie are still collecting in all the money but we are confidently expecting the final total to be in excess of £1000! Thank you again

Everything comes to those that wait…

Even for dogs who have been with us since 2009. Nobody seemed to want Harley, he was our longest stay resident. Lucky Harley has now gone to a new home with Jackie and Ron. They adopted Oscar, another long-stay dog, last year but sadly he died early on 2011. Now Harley has gone to join them and he already has his paws under the table and is happily snoring on their sofa.

Jumping for animals

Our supporters do brilliant and daring things to raise money for us. Thanks to Val Mackenzie who did a sky-dive with the British Parachute School to raise £352 to help our animals. Very brave – I feel queasy just thinking about it!

Nice people love Staffies

We know that Staffordshire Bull Terriers have a bit of an image problem. Some people mistakenly consider them to be the pet of choice for the vodka, violence and vomit brigade. Totally untrue and unwarranted as this short film from the RSPCA points out. Watch and smile – and if you would like to give a Staffy a home come and see us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t85JE1egncQ

Health Walkies

City of York Council’s Sport and Active Leisure team run a Health Walks programme to encourage people to lead an active lifestyle. They have teamed up with the Animals’ Home to run sociable group walks with some of our dogs. It will be fun, and good for both people and dogs – and you never know we may even find a few more adopters. For details see http://www.york.gov.uk/news/latestNews/650133

Improved environment

If you’ve visited the Animal Home recently you’ll have seen the improvements to the appearance of our grounds. We now have two volunteer gardeners, Julia and Susan, who are making a huge difference. We are also improving our sustainability by storing and using rain water, making our own compost and growing food for our small animals as we as creating a habitat for wildlife. If you can help by donating plants, pots, watering cans, hanging baskets or a wheelbarrow please bring them to the home. You can follow their progress by clicking here.
