Adoption Fee Update

Posted November 2025

Why We’re Increasing Our Adoption Fees

At York Animal Home, our mission has always been to give every animal the best chance at a healthy, happy life. Our priority has always been the welfare of every animal who comes through our doors. We know that adopting a rescue pet is one of the most meaningful decisions you can make, and we want to be transparent with our community about an important upcoming change.

We know important affordable adoption is to our community, and we never make changes like this lightly. However, our adoption fees have not changed in over 5 years despite the cost of caring for our animals increasing significantly during that time. Beginning 1/12/2025, our adoption fees will be increasing slightly. This decision hasn’t been made lightly, and we’d like to explain why it’s necessary.

Rising Costs of Animal Care

Over the past year, the cost of providing high-quality care for our animals has risen considerably. Veterinary treatments, food, cleaning supplies, and utilities have all become more expensive. Every animal that arrives at the Animal Home receives full veterinary checks, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, microchipping, neutering, and of course, plenty of love and attention from our team.

Continuing Our Commitment to Quality

We’re determined to maintain the same high standard of care that every animal deserves — whether they stay with us for a few days or many months. Adjusting our adoption fees ensures we can continue to give each animal the very best start before they find their forever homes.

Still Great Value for Adopters

Even with the increase, adopting from RSPCA York Animal Home remains excellent value. The adoption fee covers far more than you might realise — services that would cost much more at a private vet.

When you adopt from us, you’re not just bringing home a new family member—you’re also supporting a comprehensive package of care that sets your pet up for lifelong health and happiness that includes:

Dogs:

  • Vaccinations - £89*
  • Kennel cough Vaccination - £55*
  • Flea and Worm - £49*
  • Microchipping - £22*
  • Spay £454* or Neuter £347*

Cats:

  • Vaccinations - £ 70*
  • Flea and worm £40*
  • Microchipping - £22*
  • Spay - £160* or Neuter - £90*

*Typical cost at a private vet based on average animal weight. Costs will vary depending on vet and animal.

When your adoption fee, you’re not just gaining a companion; you’re helping to fund the ongoing care and rescue work that saves hundreds of lives each year.

What Are Your New Adoption Fees?

From 1/12/2025 our standard adoption fees will be:

Cat - £150

Dog - £300

Puppy - £400

Kitten - £200

Your Support Makes the Difference

Every adoption, donation, and kind word from our community helps us continue our vital work. By understanding and supporting this change, you’re directly helping us care for more animals in need — and ensuring that every one of them has the chance to experience safety, love, and a second chance.

Thank you for standing with us, for opening your hearts and homes, and for helping us continue to make a difference for animals across York and beyond.
